No injuries are reported following a morning fire at Frances Court Condominiums on Oak Street in Riverside, near St. Vincent’s Riverside. The first crews on scene reported fire showing from the window of a third story apartment, and smoke was showing from the roof. JFRD says the fire started on the 3rd floor of the condos and it was put out in less than 30 minutes. Only 4 units were damaged in the fire. JFRD had to call in more crews as they were fighting the blaze. Some of the residents who live at the complex say they woke up to loud popping and screaming. “I heard some screaming outside, so I didn't want to go outside, so I though maybe ya know, some kind of, ya know, dispute going on. It was actually my friend Kenny’s wife who was outside screaming for people to get out.” Says Filipe Gusmao. He says he heard loud popping when he woke up and though that maybe someone was shooting a gun. “I popped my head out and I saw the fire. And uh ya know, I just rushed to get out of my house. Grabbed my documents, like my documents that I needed, my computer and got out the door. Gusmao says. The person who lives in the unit where the fire started was visibly shaken and upset after he was able to escape. One man who escaped the fire with his family and dog says when he woke up he saw the orange glowing reflection from the fire in the windows of the complex. “I was like its kinda an issue.” says Kenneth Kreves. He says it was his wife who was yelling and trying to wake people up when the fire started. “This building’s so old, ya know, it don’t have a fire alarm, or anything, any type of alarm, so you have to be the alarm.” says Kreves. The State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating exactly what started the fire, but JFRD says they believe it began accidentally.
