There was no speech, no joint appearance with the candidate, no statement to waiting television cameras and reporters. Instead, after a few weeks of thinking about the GOP standard bearer, Speaker Paul Ryan threw his support behind presumptive Republican Party nominee Donald Trump – with a simple Tweet.

In a column for a local newspaper in his Wisconsin district, Ryan talked more about what he wants Republicans in the U.S. House to do, than praising his party’s nominee for President.

“It’s no secret that he and I have our differences,” Ryan said of Trump. “I won’t pretend otherwise.”

That is true not only on what issues Trump has emphasized, but the actual differences in policy that many GOP lawmakers in the Congress have with Trump.

But Ryan – and many other elected Republicans – concluded that with Trump at the helm, there was a chance for Republicans to enact their own policy agenda.

“Donald Trump can help us make it a reality,” Ryan said.

Trump welcomed the endorsement – also, on Twitter.

Critics of Trump were quick to tie the two men together.

“Speaker Ryan’s abject surrender makes it official: the GOP is Trump’s party now,” said Adam Jentleson, Deputy Chief of Staff to Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid.
