From Charleston, South Carolina –

Hours before a key debate in the Republican race for President, the Governor of Georgia told a meeting of the Republican National Committee that it is important for the GOP to stick together behind the eventual winner of the Republican primary race.

“Please rally around whoever happens to be our nominee,” Gov. Nathan Deal (R-GA) said to applause. “We cannot afford to otherwise.”

Deal compared the current race for President to his own run for Governor in 2010, when a big field of candidates brought about a closely contested primary runoff, that Deal ultimately won.

But the Georgia Governor said he would never have won in November if the party had remained splintered – that he said should be a lesson for 2016 in the race for the White House.

“I can assure there are no candidates running for President of the United States on the Republican label who don’t want to win,” Deal told his lunch time audience.
